History
The Medford Lakes Police Department was established as a full-time
department in 1939. For almost three decades, Chief Leon Gager was
the only full-time officer. In the late sixties, additional full-time
officers were added to the force. By 1975, the Department had reached
is current full-time staff of a chief and eight fully trained and
certified officers and one Class II Special Officers. Many personnel
changes over the years have redirected the Department's policies and
procedures, but the current group is the finest, best trained, and
most professional to have worked here. |

Community Outreach
The Department's main function, as seen by all it's officers, is to serve the residents of the community. Officers participate in D.A.R.E. education, bike licensing and inspection, dog licensing, safety programs, and community policing activities. The Department recently held the second in a series of community seminars. The first, in October of 1997, was a program to fingerprint schoolchildren. The second seminar, in June of 1998, was a safety and information program specifically directed at the Borough's senior residents. Future programs include Project KidCare, a superior identification program for children of all ages, and a seminar entitled Drugs and Alcohol in Medford Lakes. |

Public Safety
Each year, officers patrol over 80,000 miles in the 1.25 square mile town. They issue almost 2,000 motor vehicle summonses and 1,000 written warnings. Each year, over 200 people are arrested on charges ranging from aggravated assault to motor vehicle theft, from disorderly conduct to possession of open alcohol. Officers perform over 3,000 checks on vacation residences annually, and operate radar almost 2,000 times. |

Training and Education
Training and continuing education is the hallmark of the Medford Lakes
Police Department. Each month, several officers attend classes ranging
from Breathalyzer Instruction to Accident Investigation to Management
and Leadership to Bike Patrol Techniques. Officers complete required
In-Service Training, Firearms Certification, and Radar Certification.
Within a few months, all officers of the Department will be trained
as Emergency Medical Technicians, and the Department has recently
purchased a defibrillator, using a grant from the Medford Lakes Lions
Club. Members of the Department continually learn and re-learn their
craft, and are considered to be among the best trained and equipped
officers in the County. |
